Heaven Help Us When the Devil’s Rain! Patriarch Steve Preston goes missing and worried mom Emma (Ida Lupino) sends eldest son Mark (William Shatner) in search for his father. Corbis (Ernest Borgnine) is a Satanic priest hell-bent on recovering a valuable book listing the names of those who sold their souls to the devil a book that resides with the Preston family. Mark refuses to hand it over and puts up a brave fight, only to wind up an unwilling sacrifice. Occult expert, Dr. Richards (Eddie Albert) and Mark’s younger brother, Tom (Tom Skerritt) plot to free the Prestons and destroy The Devil’s Rain, a bottle containing the souls of those already damned. The battle rages as the elixir is released and a bloody rain of devilry and malevolence is loosed upon a screaming, melting world.

Summary of Movie
Hayao Miyazaki directed the first six episodes of Meitantei Holmes (literally “Famous Detective Holmes,” 1981) and wrote the scripts for some of them. Copyright disputes held up the Japanese-Italian coproduction until 1984, when it was continued with different artists. The rumpled designs for the canine versions of Holmes and Dr. Watson bear Miyazaki’s distinctive stamp, as does the look of many of the vehicles, including Holmes’s steam-powered automobile and blimp, the various biplanes, and an outsized gunship from the British Navy. Holmes repeatedly outwits the vulpine Moriarty, despite the bumbling interference of Inspector LeStrade, but the later stories grow increasingly silly. In “The White Cliffs of Dover,” it’s Mrs. Hudson who stops Moriarty’s plot to sabotage the first London-Paris airmail service. The English dub is dismayingly flat, and the subtitled Japanese version makes more entertaining viewing. Suggested for ages 7 and up: Minor cartoon violence, tobacco use. –Charles Solomon

It’s a familiar story: Pretty young thing shakes up silver-haired recluse. With the recent exception of Venus, however, most such efforts fall flat. In adapting Brian Morton’s novel, Andrew Wagner treads well-worn ground, but avoids most pitfalls of the genre. It helps that his theatrically trained cast sidesteps cliché in their finely calibrated performances (including Jessica Hecht as a savvy magazine editor). He also refuses to exploit his female protagonist. Heather Wolfe (Six Feet Under’s Lauren Ambrose) is confident and intelligent, but she’s neither sociopath nor muse. The grad student approaches New York novelist Leonard Schiller (Frank Langella in a deceptively subtle turn) about interviewing him for her thesis, but he declines. He’s working on his fifth book–the first four are out-of-print–and doesn’t have time to spare. She flirts and cajoles until Leonard starts to yield. It’s an open question whether the author is charmed more by her admiration or her good looks. There’s shading in Heather’s methods, too, since she has difficulty distinguishing the man from the myth. Leonard’s daughter, Ariel (Lili Taylor), is concerned their relationship is unhealthy, while he feels the same about her rekindled romance with former flame Casey (Adrian Lester). She wants to have children, he doesn’t, and Leonard doesn’t want to see her get hurt again. In the end, each charts their own course, resulting in a hopeful–if hard-won–conclusion. Written over two years and shot in 18 days, Starting Out in the Evening puts most big-budget literary dramas to shame. –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Summary of Movie
This whimsical sex comedy presents itself as an alien documentary on the rituals and habits of terrestrial romance. Featuring Mackenzie Astin (The Last Days of Disco) and a tightly clad Carmen Electra (from the once-popular TV show Baywatch) as the Male and Female, the movie’s at its best when the alien’s commentary (voiced with supercilious aplomb by David Hyde Pierce, Wolf, Frasier) misinterprets flirting behavior at nightclubs. The jokes grow thinner as dating turns into a relationship (and the humor’s perspective is decidedly male). Still, there are moments of wit, and the overall tone of The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human is more silly than smarmy, which sets it apart from most of the sex comedy genre.
